Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Gain a general understanding of CSA Z317.13, and JCIA- PCI related elements

  • Identify the risk factors and sources of health care facility infections

  • Identify all staff who should be involved in infection prevention and control measures during any aspect of construction, renovation and maintenance activities

  • Review effective infection prevention and control procedures during construction, renovation and maintenance

  • Understand and effectively apply infection prevention and control measures for renovation and/or new construction projects

  • Learn about industry best practices and how they can apply to your specific role

The course details the steps of the practical use of infection control risk assessments (ICRA) and management techniques for construction in the hospital setting. It provides a basic understanding of the infection control risk assessment process as it applies to healthcare construction, as well as the practical use of ICRA tools including containment, pressure differentials containments method, HEPA filtration, air sampling, and other monitoring techniques.

Supervisors and foremen who take the course will gain the tools and resources they need to make crucial decisions in the healthcare construction environment. The course is also designed to educate healthcare construction workers on how to work around everyday activities, including unexpected construction emergencies, and how to successfully and safely get their work done.

This course also addresses standard protocol for meeting with the Canada Accreditation, Joint Commission (for USA hospitals), CSA, the Centers for Disease Control, and the American Institute of Architects’ requirements for healthcare construction.

Upon passing the examination, students receive a certificate of completion and a resource toolkit that gives participants the means to determine practical solutions for construction requirements
